Lesson n° 5: Correct posture
Sit straight with relaxed shoulders and the harp resting against your right shoulder (left-handed players use the left shoulder). Choose a chair that is the right height so you are comfortable: your left hand is positioned in the middle of the strings, the arm in the extension of the chest. If you are too low, the harp will lean backwards on you. Mind the backache! If you are too high, you'll have to lean forward to play, and your hand posture will suffer from it.

Usually, the right hand plays the melody on the treble strings, and the left hand plays the arrangements on the bass strings. Of course, left-handed players need to reverse these instructions.

The left arm, with the elbow slightly upwards, is positioned as if holding a ball straight ahead of us, at arm's length, level with the chest: thus, the left hand reaches the middle of the strings: this is the correct height!

For example, playing on a small Camac harp with the feet on, a standard chair is at the right height; without feet or with a smaller harp, you'll need to sit on a low stool (with cushion !) or to put the harp on a kind of tripod to heighten it.
